  Sophie Lottie, changed her name by deed-poll to Thelma, not that it made much difference, because all the family all called her 'Lovie', and later she became Auntie Lovie to the nieces and nephews. She worked in the refreshments area of the Victorian railways. She would often tell of her meeting members of the royal family when they traveled by train to country Victoria. She was working at the railway station in Adelaide when she met (1927) and married (1928), William Keith Francis. This marriage produced a son Kenneth William Keith "Ken" Francis, in July 1928. Sophie was just 19 years old when ken was born. Some time later due to instability in the marriage caused by her husband, Thelma left the marriage, she divorced him in 1931. While she was living on her own, she met and was supported by her friend David Pettit, and when she decided that she would return to Melbourne with the child "Ken", David, or 'Mick' as he was known to his family followed and provided financial assistance. They married in the following year in 1932, although 'Mick' raised ken like his own child, Thelma and 'Mick' never legally gave him the name Pettit. *** see notes for David 'Mick' Pettit. For a while she operated the kiosk at the migrant hostel at the bottom of Gower St East Preston. Thelma was very involved in community affairs, and worked on the various mother's clubs.
