St George's Terrace, Perth, has a plaque to William and Eliza (sic) Backshall, market gardeners. The plaques were part of WA's 150th Anniversary Celebrations and is part of a series called "A Walk through the History of Western Australia 1829-1979". This information came from Judy Weggelaar
BACKSHALL: The English writer is in possession of a postcard bearing a photograph of an inscribed stone flag lying (he believes) in a pavement in front of a civic hall in Perth. The flag bears the inscription:
"William and Eliza Backshall, 1842. Market gardeners."
It is believed William is the writer's great-grandfather's brother who emigrated to the Swan River colony aboard the Simon Taylor about 1841-42. He is writing a short story and would appreciate further information. He visited Perth in the 1940s but sadly didn't know of his family connection. Contact: William Backshall, 100 Anderson Road, Litherland, Liverpool, Lancs. L21 7NG, England.
Death registered under Beckshall.
Death certificate gives age 85, Cemetery data age 83 - he was 76 if he was born in c 1787. But if it was 1781 then 83 is more plausible.
So, which is the correct William?? The one baptised 1781 West Hoathly or the on baptised 1787 West Grinstead.
Bicentenial Dictionary of Western Australians has born 1787, of West Hoathly.
