Notes - Before Jeremiah Bradley
We have an almost continuous and well documented family tree from the time that Jeremiah Bradley is apprenticed in 1724 in Colchester; [subsequent Colchester Freemen Records amend the surname to ‘Braddy’]. Before that there are gaps and significant name changes that create uncertainties. Nevertheless, having spent considerable time and effort in searching the records in and around Colchester the following hypothesis is my ‘best guess’ so far.
Apprenticeships were normally taken up between the age of 14 and 17 for between 7 and 10 years . In the case of Jeremiah’s apprenticeship [whose father is recorded as Jeremie, a weaver] it started in 1724 and was for 7 years. This would put Jeremiah’s birth between 1707 and 1710. I have found no baptism records in the wider Colchester area for this period or later.
However there is a marriage for Jerimy Brady and Hannah Davis (both single and of St Botolph’s parish) on 14 August 1709 at All Saints. This would fit with the birth of a first son Jeremiah in 1710. I have still to tie down burials for either Jerimy or Hannah and unfortunately at this period ages tend not to be recorded in the parish registers.
Turning to a birth for Jerimy Brady we encounter further challenges. There are no recorded baptisms in Colchester but there is a baptism of Jeremy Brabe on 13 September 1691 whose parent Jeremiah Brabe and Sarah Abbot married in Abberton on 5 March 1688/9. This would put the Jerimy Brady at barely 18 when he marries Hannah Davis but that would not be unreasonable if Hannah was already pregnant and the child Jeremie was born in early 1710. There is a baptism of a Hannah Davis on 7 December 1692 in St James, Colchester.
A will for Jeremie Brabee in 1688 provides the clues to directly take us back to a christening in Colchester on 23 February 1639 at the church of St Mary at the Walls (father Jeremie Brabee and Elsabeth (sic)). In his will Jeremie provides for his first son Jeremie (who marries Sarah Abbot); his second son Thomas and daughters Sarah and Mary. He also provides for his ‘daughters’ Elizabeth and Dorothy Wellham; and his ‘son’ Mathias Cofield. Records show Jeremie (widower) marries Sarah Cofield in 1680. There is no record for the marriage with Dorothy Wellman but it most likely took place in about 1664 and the mother of Jeremie’s children would therefore be Dorothy
