The workhouse became a hospital (didn't they all!) and I lived just up the road from it for a few years! It was in use as a geriatric/convalesence hospital until two or three years ago.

THAMES CITY
According to Lloyd's Register for 1857 through 1865, the sailing ship THAMES CITY was built under special survey in Sunderland, England, in 1856: 557 tons, 142.0 x 29.5 x 17.5 feet (length x beam x depth of hold). Her master was J. Glover, she was owned by "R'nthwte" (a name I do not recognize), and registered in Sunderland. Only the Register volumes for 1857 and 1858 give a destined voyage; in both cases, this is to India. The entry for the THAMES CITY in the Register for 1865 is hand-stamped "wrecked". I cannot find any reference to this wreck in Palmer's Index to the Times (London), but the ship was not an important one. The CFHS record of Parish Records and Bishop’s Transcripts for Landbeach show that William Flavell married Maria Phillips at Landbeach in Cambridgeshire on 7 August 1836. William was a bachelor and Maria Phillips was a spinster. The couple were both from the parish of Landbeach. The marriage was witnessed by a Charles Webb and a Sarah Hewitt. All signed their names with a cross or ‘mark’.
The 1841 census shows William (32 year-old agricultural labourer) living at Landbeach with his wife ‘Meriah’ (23) and children James (4), Harriet (2) and Eliza (5m) where all were born in the county.
The 1851 British census shows William (then a 45 year-old agricultural labourer) residing in the Chesterton Union House with his wife Mary (aged 33 years), daughters Eliza (9), Phoebe (7) and Martha (6) and son William (4). All were born at Landbeach. Also present at the workhouse was a James Flavel, a 14 year-old scholar who had been born at Landbeach. Chesterton is located northwest of Cambridge on the outskirts of the town of Peterborough.
William and Maria Flavell and their family emigrated to Victoria from Plymouth on the THAMES, leaving on 9 July 1855 and disembarking at Geelong on 11 October the same year. The shipping lists show that on board the THAMES were William (a 50 year-old agricultural labourer), his wife Maria (aged 39), daughters Phoebe (12), Martha (10) and Harriet (1), and sons William (8) and John (3) as well as an Eliza Flavell who was said to be a 14 year-old domestic servant (Eliza was actually the couple’s eldest daughter). William and Maria’s destination was River Leigh. They had been engaged by a J. Fleming for one pound plus rations. Eliza was going to Burnt Ridge to work for a T. Webb for 3 months from 19 October 1855. The shipping lists also indicate that William, Maria and Eliza could read while the others had no education. All were Wesleyans.
William was contracted to work on the Swanston’s station at Inverleigh. According to the works of Billis and Kenyon and J. M. Lonsdale (in his 1978 book ‘Gateway to the West: A Record of Early Inverleigh’), the station was originally known as the Weatherboard. The original lease was taken up by Charles Swanston’s Derwent company in 1837. It was leased to the Mercer brothers from 1843 until September 1854 when it was sold to a William Harding who divided it into a Number 1 and Number 2 properties. These were taken over in May 1855 by Charles L. Swanston who transferred his interests in the Number 2 property to a William Berthon. The Number 1 property became known as ‘Englewood’. At about the time of William’s arrival, the station homestead was built. But living conditions for most of the other settlers and workers were very primitive with most living in either bark huts or tents.
William Flavell died of typhoid fever at Inverleigh on 28 July 1863, aged 58 years. His death certificate shows that he had been in Victoria for eight years and that he had married Maria Phillips at Landbeach, Cambridgeshire when he was 30 years of age. Issue at the time of his death were said to be: James (aged 27), Harriet (deceased), Eliza (23), Phoebe (20) who was the informant, Martha (18), William (15), John (deceased), John (12), Harriet (deceased), Benjamin (7) and George (5). Maria remained in the district until 1879 when she went to live with one of her sons at Wickliffe in central Victoria. In 1897 she moved to Watchem to live with her daughter Eliza Bruce (formally Free). She died at Watchem on 27 November1907, aged 91 years (see obituary under Maria).
