• Notes

  Richard Herbert Miller, travelled to Western Australia from Stawell in 1903. He bought a wheat farm consisting of 380 acres near Tammin, 150 km east of Perth, before working for the Western Australian Government Railways. He reached the level of Inspector. An inspector supervised a group of gangers who supervised a group of fettlers who kept the railway in repair. Family said that Richard came over in 1901 as steerage in a boat. Maybe listed in the captain's log. He said that there was a big table in steerage and the cooked potatoes were thrown on the table and one grabbed them as they fell. They were fed like pigs. Richard came over with the gold seekers, got as far as Tammin, made friends with the ganger, Con Martin, who got him a job cutting scrub at 7/- a day. His future wife followed him over.
