      Eliza BROWNING was born in about 1814-16 in Tetbury. Her father, Isaac BROWNING is identified on her marriage certificate and she is also identified the mother of Frederick STOKES on his birth certificate.

      Eliza married Thomas STOKES at Hempsted, Gloucestershire in 1840 and they had seven children, the first being christened in Churchill, Oxon where Thomas had been raised. Hempsted has a reputation amongst family historians for being a magnet for clandestine marriages, as often the bride and groom were not from Hempstead. It is also possible that the local vicar had a policy of offering "penny weddings", i.e. no fee weddings that was taken advantage of by non-residents.

      It's possible that Eliza had had a child named Ellen Harding BROWNING in 1834several years before marrying Thomas STOKES in 1840. Ellen later emigrated to Australia so she should be found in the 1841 census with her parents. I have yet to search for this census record.

      Based on the Harding name (which is not a BROWNING family name) it might be speculated that one of the two HARDING brothers - Thomas and Charles - was the father of Ellen. Thomas HARDING went on to have a large family in Tetbury so he is unlikely to be the father, however his younger brother Charles c.1809 either moved away or died young. Local burial records and parish records including paternity allegations should be checked.

      I hadn't checked for an earlier marriage or children and so I hadn't found Ellen Harding BROWNING. I haven't found the 1841 census record for Thomas and Eliza STOKES yet, and Ellen is not on the 1851 with her mother (but she would have been 17 so not unsurprising perhaps).

      Potential fathers of Ellen would presumably be the HARDING boys (Thomas and Charles) born about 1806-9. Thomas married and had loads of children in Tetbury. But what happened to Charles?

      Some things to consider researching:

      1. Does Ellen's original christening record suggest anything?
      2. Is there anything in the Tetbury parish records about any paternity allegations? or poor law hardship payments for unmarried mother?
      3. Did Charles die? Parish burial records
      4. Find the 1841 census for Thomas and Eliza STOKES. They were in Hempstead, Gloucs in Sep 1840 but their first known child was born in Churchill, Oxon in 1843.
