On his daughter Minnie Kate's birth certificate (1867) the address is Camden Place, Lewisham Village.
In the 1871 census the address is not clear due to damage to the document. However, it is in Camden Place and the house is ...TH HOUSE - probably PERTH HOUSE.
On his daughter Ethen Caroline's birth certificate (Oct 1871) the address is 4 Camden Place, Lewisham Village.
On his daughter Ethel Caroline's death certificate (Oct 1872) the address is The Avenue, Tooting.

Military: The following information came from Adrian Norris in Perth, Western Australia:
Joseph FARMANER arrived in Western Australia on June 25, 1840 aboard the sailing ship "RUNNEYMEDE" as a private with his regiment the 51st. He was stationed at a small outpost call BULLSBROOK that is approximately 35 kilometres North, North East of Perth. It is further recorded that he was promoted to the rank of Corporal in 1845. and there is a reference to the discharge of Corporal Joseph FARMANER from the 51st. Regiment as PR6547 but regrettably, there is no actual date.
Adrian later sent the following amendments and additional data:
I am conscious of the many omissions in my research into the life and times of the above Regiment in Western Australia and I have found many variants in the spelling of surnames and gaps in the actions of the members in various posts. Since the governing body of the regiments was in the UK all returns and reports were sent there and it is extremely hard to find any local detail relating to the movement of soldiers especially privates.
From letters and reports it appears that many of the settlers were of the opinion that the soldiers were suitable to act as guards and defend them from the natives but by their very presence would lower the tone of the establishment. However most of the soldiers who took discharge in this state began businesses and were very successful, of course this did not help them assimilate into the local communities, and in a way may explain the Australian dislike of "class". The general conditions of service were poor and the isolation of stations at times caused concern as parties travelling from one post to another frequently became bushed. (local term for lost in bushland)
On January 16, 1843 an order was issued to the effect "That the lines of communication between posts should be defined and the trees, at intervals of 50 yards, should be marked on both sides in the form of a diamond one foot in length. Where there were no trees then stones or a line of stakes were to be provided." (WO28)
On June 25, 1840 two companies of the 51st Regiment arrived in Western Australia aboard the vessel "Runnymeade" from Hobart, Tasmania. Consisting of 6 officers, 1 assistant Surgeon, 6 sergeants, 124 rank and file and 24 women with 24 children. After 7 years the detachment left by transport "Java" for Calcutta on March 12, 1847. (6 officers, 1 assistant Surgeon, 9 sergeants, 2 drummers, 98 rank and file, 21 women with 47 children.
During this period, there were at least 7 deaths and it would appear that 2 sergeants, 31 rank and file (including 2 drummers) remained in W.A. and took discharge to become settlers.
Among the quarterly pay list for the period ending December 31, 1840 was: -
1226 Private FERMANER Joseph. At this time, he was stationed at Ellens Brook, a very small settlement North East of Perth. Total of 6 privates. (Rumour has it that this outpost was to protect the property of the then Colonial Secretary, Peter Broun.).
The next record for Joseph FERMANER is in WO 28 dated December 19, 1843 when, as a corporal, he is ordered to withdraw his detachment from Vasse and march them to Bunbury a distance of approximately 30 miles. There have been no other recorded instances of movement of this person so one must assume that he was transferred to Vasse when the Ellens Brook station was closed.
Will: National Probate Calendar - Wills and Admons - 1899
Farmaner Joseph of Perth House Tooting Graveney Surrey died 7 Oct 1899 Probate London 8 November to Frederick Richard Lovegrove auctioneer and Sydney Melville Robinson gentleman.

Australia: The following information came from Adrian Norris in Perth, Australia.
"Joseph FARMANER arrived in Western Australia on June 25, 1840 aboard the sailing ship "RUNNEYMEDE" as a private with his regiment the 51st.
On April 24, 1846, at Perth Joseph married Caroline BACKSHALL (or BACKSHELL) and the reference number for this marriage is 174/46 and a copy of this can be obtained from the local Registrar of B.D.&M'S. The parents of Caroline are shown as William and Lydia and her birth is indicated as 1830 but no other detail is given. (There seems to be some confusion over the name BACKSHELL / BACKSHALL as it has been transcribed with an "e" in the marriage register but there still exists a large number of Backshall's with an "a" in Perth to this day while the Backshell's have been reduced to 7 only)"
"Records show that Joseph & Caroline traveled from West.Aust. to S.A. (this has been interpreted as South Australia when ever shown as any reference to South Africa has been fully spelt out.) on May 7, 1848 and returned to Perth per "LAPWING" on February 22, 1851 with their son Frederick Charles. A reference to the actual registration of his birth has not been found and it is possible that as visitors they never bothered."
"Joseph FARMANER was a member of the Freemasons Lodge of Unity in 1855.
By 1860 he owned "town lots" in the district of Newcastle (outer suburban) and by 1862 he had also acquired land in the district of Northam.
In 1864 he became a member of the "Perth Building Society" and had qualified as a juror due to having a personal estate in excess of 1500 pounds."
"A daughter, name unknown, made a visit to South Australia on March 8, 1862 per the ship "STRATHALLEN"
On January 1, 1863 a son, name unknown, moved to England for education per the "TARTAR". Common sense would indicate this to be Frederick Charles as he was at least 14 especially as it is also reported that FARMANER JNR returned to Australia shortly after the main family arrived in the UK."
"Joseph & Caroline departed Australia for London on January 13, 1866 per the "ZEPHYR""
"George FARMANER born 1807 and died June 17, 1887 in England. Married Mary ? born 1806 and died May 25, 1876 in England. George had been in business with his brother Joseph as a "Merchant" and Joseph's address was given as "Perth House" Tooting, formerly of Perth W.A."
