Notes - The parish registers compiled by the CFHS show that there have been Flavel(l)s at Landbeach from at least 1586 when John Flavell (-1625) married Katering (Katharine) Cherington (-1634) there on 6 June 1586. John and Katharine had six children - William (1588-1618), Tobye (1594-before 1599), Gervase (1592-1627), Elizabeth (1594-), John (1597-) and Toby (1599-1659) - who were all born in Landbeach.
The registers show a Tobias Flavell marrying Elizabeth Manchett in Landbeach on 11 Nov 1634. He and Elizabeth had at least six children - Tobias jnr (1635-), John (1637-), William (1640-1686), Elizabeth (1643-) and two Susans (1646-1647) and (1649-1682). Tobias jnr, John and William all married out of the parish: Tobias to Katheren Clarke in Rampton (which is near Cottenham) on 28 Nov 1669, William to an Alice and John to an Anne.
There is no record of Tobias and Katharine having children in Landbeach which suggests that he went to live in Rampton. The record shows a Katherine and a Catherine Flavell, both widows, dying in Landbeach in 1714 and 1718 respectively. Children baptised in Landbeach in the 1600s included:
1) John on 31 Mar 1672, parents John and Anne Flavell;
2) John on 18 Feb 1671, Martha on 1 Mar 1673 (she died the same year) and Martha on 23 May 1765, all to William and Alice Flavell; and
3) William and Martha who were both baptised on 30 Aug 1680 whose parents were John and Mary Flavell. John and Elizabeth had three other children who were born out of the parish but died in Landbeach: John on 14 Sep 1680, Mathew on 17 Nov 1680 and Elizabeth on 3 Dec 1680. Mary died on 18 April 1681 and was predeceased by her husband.
One of this generation of Johns married a Katherine out of the parish. Both John and Katherine died before 1714 or 1718 but not before they had four children in Landbeach as follows:
1) Mary, baptised 18 May 1700;
2) William, baptised 25 Oct 1702 and probably died 12 Sep 1706; and
3) two Johns, the first baptised on 16 Dec 1707 and died on 17 December the same year and the second baptised on 15 May 1709.
By around 1720, then, virtually all the Flavells of Landbeach had either died or had moved from the parish. Those left in Landbeach included John and Catherine's children Mary (aged 20) and John (13). Those still alive included John and Mary's Martha (40), William and Alice's Martha (55) and Tobias and Katharen Flavell (nee Clarke) and their children who were probably living at Rampton. As there is no record of Flavells at Landbeach until Thomas and Martha's wedding there in 1795, it seems likely that the surviving Landbeach Flavells left the village around 1719 and went to live with relatives in other parishes.
Flavells reappear in Landbeach in 1795 with the marriage after banns of Thomas Flavell to Martha Webb on 15 March of that year. Both the record of banns and marriage state that Thomas and Martha were 'of this parish' which suggests that Thomas was either born in Landbeach (there is no record of his birth there) or, possibly, descended from one of the Flavells who had left the village. Marriage data further shows that Thomas was a bachelor and Martha a spinster on their marriage day, and the wedding was witnessed by a Robert Handley and a Thomas Wallis.
Information from the parish records, that collected by Debbie Flavell from the Dr Williams Library for England and Wales, and LDS FHL No 815988 shows that Thomas and Martha had six children as shown below, all born in Landbeach.
The Poll Book for Cambridgeshire 1831 election records a Thomas Flavell living as a freeman at Landbeach and owning land at Waterbeach which was 'occupied by Coulson and another' (unlikely to be our Thomas).
According to Debby Flavell, the 1841 census shows that Thomas was living in Landbeach with his son John. It also shows a Thomas Flavel, aged 69, lodging with Mary Webb and her sons James and Charles.
Thomas Flavell died in Landbeach on 9 Oct 1841, he was aged 73 years. His death certificate states that he was a labourer and that the informant, who was present at the death, was John Norris of Landbeach (John signed the certificate with a cross). The cause of Thomas' death was said to be 'infirmity'.

Inquest:
On the 11th inst. an inquest was holden at the Red Cow, Landbeach, before G J Twiss Esq on the body of an old man named Thomas Flavell who it was supposed had died in consequence of injuries received during a visit to Cambridge some time before. The inquiry was adjourned to Thursday, the 14th inst., when Mr Hammond, surgeon of this town, who had previously examined the body, gave it as his decided opinion that there were no injuries at all likely to produce death. A verdict of "natural death" was thereupon recorded.
