Notes - I came across your web page while browsing the web looking for references for my surname. My name is Paul Kavanagh-Mosson, (I was born Paul Mosson, I adopted the Kavanagh part in later life.) I come from Glasgow in Scotland, although I have been living in Spain for the past couple of years.
None of my immediate family know much at all about the name Mosson, legend is that it was originally of French origin. My grandmother separated from my grandfather, Samuel Mosson, in 1948, and we have had little contact with other members of the Mosson family since. There are still quite a few Mossons in Glasgow, including Alex Mosson, the Lord Provost, who is my father's cousin. The story in my branch of the family is that we are descended from a Jacques de la Mosson who was a Napoleonic prisoner of war in Glasgow. He apparently married a Scots woman and had at least two children, including a William Mosson who is buried in Carluke Kirk graveyard in Lanarkshire. According to the story, Jacques abandonded his wife after the wars and returned to France. (My grandmother claims he set a pattern the Mosson men would repeat down the centuries... but she would say that...)
I have been able to trace a number of Mossons in France, and found some references to some in Germany and to another branch in England (unrelated to the Scottish Mossons it seems). There also seem to be a number of distinct US branches of the family. I would be extremely grateful if you could share anything of your family history with me, especially what you may know of its origins. I eventually would like to write a family history to share with the rest of the Mosson clan.
Looking forward to hearing from you
