Thanks to John Meyers OAM of the Maryborough Military and Colonial Museum who is currently visiting Perth, we know the answer. #697 in the front row of the 11th Battalion-Cheops photograph is Major Edmund Drake-Brockman. In his right hand, he is holding whistle. On a prearranged signal with the photographer, perhaps three blasts, the men know that the camera's shutter is about to open and record their group for posterity.
