  January ,1935 THE LATE DAVID BUTCHART A Colonist Since 1852 One of the oldest identities in the State In David Butchart of Blackwall Reach, passed away peacefully at the home of his son. Jack Butchart Francis-street Buckland Hill, last Wednesday. David Butchart was a few months off 98, and enjoyed very good health for his great age almost up till the time of his death. He was born on the Rock of Gibraltar on May 31, 1838, the son of John Butchart a private in the 79th Regiment of Foot who obtained his honorable discharge from the regiment after 22 years of service, and enlisted as a pensioner guard on a ship trans- porting convicts to this State. At the age of 13 David Butchart accompanied his father and the rest of the family to Fremantle in the ship William Jardine, which arrived on August 4, 1852, after an Rg-days' voyage from Graves end. The late David Butchart possessed a remarkably retentive memory, and was able to recall historical and other events of his early manhood in "Western Australia as if they occurred but comparatively recently. He was, moreover, a good raconteur, as many people who display more than a passing Interest in the early life of the colony can aver. His remains were interred in the Congregational portion of the Fremantle Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. He is survived by four sons and two daughters.
