Ships Sabrina
-
Notes - Elizabeth Dean /Cousins and husband John migrated to Western Australia in 1853 aboard the Sabrina they were among those lodged at the Emigrants Depot at Toodyay. At first they were employed by Demster at Buckland when this work was finished they walked to Bejoording seeking employment, sleeping for one night on the way in the unfinished Culham Church.they found work with Isaac Doust, who at the time was farming at Erandyne Springs, possibly on Nat Shaw's Grant. This was an unhappy time for them, because their first child became lost in the bush at Erandyne and was never found although Squire Phillips organised a search which lasted for days. The cousins family then went to Glendearg to work for Ewen Mackintosh. When Elizabeths sister and husband arrived they took their place at Mackintoshes and brought lot 34 in May 1860 in Bejoording and built a Mudbrick Cottage there.
Obituary of Elizabeth Cousins published in "The Western Methodist" 1/8/1925. Typed word-for-word however some of the information seems to be incorrect.
The Late Mrs John Cousins
On June 22, at the residence of her son, Mrs Cousins known to most Methodists as Grannie, entered into rest at the age of 91. She was born on May 19, 1834 and came to West Australia with her husband in 1852. They were six months on the seas. During the voyage a child was born to them and was named Elizabeth Sabini, the latter being the name of the ship. On reaching Fremantle they set out for Bejoording in the Toodyay district. They travelled in a bullock dray and were a fortnight on the road. A sad fate befell the little girl born on board ship. She was stolen by the blacks and eaten by them. They faced all the hardships of pioneer life outback and Mrs Cousins lived in the same home for 72 years. Besides the little girl referred to there were 12 other children and when she passed away Mrs Cousins left behind her nearly 200 descendents. She possessed a remarkable personality and was greatly beloved by all who knew her. She was lovingly known as Grannie Cousins. She took a great interest in Home Missions and was the true friend of all the young Home Missionaries stationed in that district. They made her homestead their home. She was a dear old lady and was greatly blessed in her service for her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
