from pages 5&6. The Simpsons were offered free passages aboard the "MARY", he as guardian of the Parkhurst boys during the voyage and she as matron in charge of the servant girls. Their cabin compartments over looked the hatchway to the single womens' quarters. Mrs Simpson surveyed the young women as they came aboard with some interest for she had two young children and wished to enlist one as a nursemaid. She looked askance at Mary Manuel, whose closely cropped hair was hidden under a mob-cap, suggestive of a jailbird. She chose instead nineteen year old Elizabeth Churchill.
further in the book on page 11...Thirty seven year old Mary Manuel was the first to marry. Within a few weeks of landing she took an old soldier for her husband. A short time after this Elizabeth Churchill was married to James Haycock Hutton, a fellow passenger on the "Mary". Both had accompanied the Simpsons to their grant in the York district.
