Location: Approaching from Hannover or Kiel, leave the Autoroute A7 at the junction with the 432 following signposts for the Airport (Flughafen). After 2 kilometres turn right onto Swebenweg which later merges with Krohnstieg and passes under the airport runway. After 4 kilometres turn right onto 433 Chaussee. After 2 kilometres turn left onto Erdkampsweg following signs for Barmbek. Continue along this road for 1.7 kilometres then turn right, immediately before a prominent railway bridge, onto a road called I.M. Grunen Grund. After a further 600 metres turn left into Alsterdorfer. The Cemetery is located in this street at the junction with Fuhlsbuttlerstrasse.
Historical Information: During the 1914-18 War the "Zentralfriedhof" (Central Cemetery) of Hamburg was used for the burial of over 300 Allied sailors and soldiers who died as prisoners of war; and in 1923 it was chosen as one of the four cemeteries to which the British graves scattered throughout Germany should be concentrated. There are now just over 700, 1914-18 and nearly 1500, 1939-45 war casualties commemorated in the Commonwealth War Plots in this cemetery. Of these, nearly 100 are unidentified. Special memorials are erected to three 1914-18 war soldiers from the United Kingdom, buried in Parchim Prisoners of War Cemetery whose graves could not be found and three 1939-45 war airmen (1 each from the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand) who were buried in Heligoland Civil Cemetery and on Heligoland Island, but whose graves are subsequently lost. The 52 sailors and soldiers originally buried in the cemetery are in Plot I, Rows A and B. The remainder were brought from cemeteries in Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg, Oldenburg, Hanover, Saxony, Brunswick and Westphalia. The great majority died as prisoners, but a few are sailors whose bodies were washed ashore on the Frisian Islands. Of the 120 cemeteries from which 1914-18 war graves were concentrated to Hamburg, the following should be mentioned: GUSTROW PRISONERS OF WAR CEMETERY, in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, contained the graves of 59 sailors, soldiers and Marines from the United Kingdom, who died in 1914-1918. Gustrow was one of the main camps in which prisoners in Germany were registered. HANNOVER (LIMMER) MILITARY CEMETERY, a garrison cemetery in one of the Western suburbs of Hannover, contained the graves of 29 soldiers and one sailor from the United Kingdom, one soldier from Canada and one of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, who died in 1914-1918. HELIGOLAND CHURCHYARD (on the island of Heligoland, or Helgoland) contained the grave of one officer of the Royal Navy who fell in 1916. MINDERHEIDE PRISONERS OF WAR CEMETERY (3 kilometres North-West of Minden, in Westphalia) contained the graves of 53 soldiers from the United Kingdom and two from Australia who died in 1916-1918. MUNSTER CAMP PRISONERS OF WAR CEMETERY, in Hannover, contained the graves of 110 soldiers, one sailor, one Marine and one airman from the United Kingdom, 13 soldiers from Australia, two of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, one from Canada and one from New Zealand, who died in 1917-1919. PARCHIM PRISONERS OF WAR CEMETERY, in Mecklenburg Schwerin, contained the graves of 75 soldiers and one sailor from the United Kingdom, four soldiers from Canada, one from Australia, one from South Africa and one from Newfoundland, who died in 1917-1919. SOLTAU PRISONERS OF WAR CEMETERY, in Hannover, contained the graves of 23 soldiers and one merchant seamen from the United Kingdom and one Australian soldier, who died in 1916-1918. VERDEN GARRISON CEMETERY (in Hannover, part of the Cathedral Cemetery) contained the graves of 16 soldiers from the United Kingdom and 13 from Australia who died in 1916-1918. In July 1974, the remains of 25 unknown British sailors from H.M. Submarine E24, which was sunk by a mine off Heligoland in March 1916, were recovered when the submarine was raised and given permanent burial in a this Cemetery.
