Notes - Charles William Goodes (Goods) was born 9 February 1864 at Drop Drop (now Torrensdale) four miles north of Mr Gambier and died 24 April 1944 Darlington Point buried Roman Catholic Cemetery Griffith NSW. On 7 March 1888 he married Charlotte Matilda Eastwell born 1871 died 1945 buried with second husband at Fremantle Cemetery. Charles was known as William. He took up land in the Parish of Balrootan between Dimboola and Nhill. William and Charlotte decided to try their luck in Western Australia and sailed through the Great Australian Bight to Fremantle. A story that has been passed down through the generations is that William and Charlotte
lost their first child, thought to be named Bess, while on their voyage to the West and she was buried at Albany but this has never been confirmed. They lived at Canvas Town, two miles from the town of Fremantle. The children attended Beaconsfield State School. Charlotte was a clever lady and quite artistic. She was skilled in lamp-shade making, weaving, knitting and cooking. Her grand-daughter recalls whenever visiting Charlotte, she would always serve a piece of Ritz Fruit Cake.
William deserted Charlotte and her young children somehwere between 1906 and 1909 and returned to the eastern states. Williams name appears on the Electorial Roll for Barellan NSW in 1916 and his occupation was a teamster. Charlotte was the sole provider for her family , she took in men boarders to make ends meet and would wheel her wheelbarrow three miles to Fremantle, collect washing from boarding houses and hotels to take home to launder. Life was difficult for her during these years and on 22 March 1916 she married William (Bill) John Currie. Before this marriage would proceed Charlotte had to make a Statutory Declaration that she had not heard from her first husband for over seven years and she was presumed a widow.
