- I am researching the Torrs/Tarrs of Cornwall and Devon as well, as I am descended from an Eliza Torr born 1822 to a John Torr and Sophia. I think there is a good chance she would have been a younger sister to James Sampson Torr of your tree, born in 1816.
His christening record, along with that of three siblings, is on the Calstock Cornwall on-line records:
This from: http://www.calstock.info/census/baptisms_t.htm
TAR, Eliza Williams : 17 Nov 1811 : John & Sophia : : : :
TAR, John : 26 Nov 1815 : John & Sophia : Calstock Town : father a miner :
TAR, Mary Ann : 2 Jan 1814 : John & Sophia : : father a miner :
TARR, James Sampson : 17 May 1818 : John & Sophia : Calstock Town : father a miner :
Lately I have been in touch with the On-line Parish Clerk for Devon and have discovered James Sampson Torr, his wife Mary and son John Sampson Torr living in Tavistock, Devon. She found the baptism for John Sampson Dawe, son of James and Mary.
"John Sampson, baptised 30 August 1840, parents James Sampson Torr and wife Mary. of Lifton village, occupation miner."
They are in Tavistock on the 1841 census, James is a Manganese miner, age 25. Mary is age 40. Living with them are 1 year-old John and 18-year-old Eliza (who I believe was my ancestor. She was married in October 1841 to Henry MItchell Dawe. One of their sons, born 1853, was Frank Sampson Dawe, my great grandfather.
Other website info has James and Mary Torr and young son John leaving Devon for Australia about 1847.
I think there was also an older brother Thomas Sampson Torr, born about 1810/11, also living in Tavistock as a miner about the same time. He and family did not emigrate to South Australia. I am trying to ascertain his parents' names.
Hope all this is of interest to you.
