• Notes

  Catherine Shanks came to Tasmania on the "Beulah" from Ireland in 1851 with her sister Mary. Neither were convicts. Catherine was 20 years old and Mary 21. The girls were among 162 single, orphaned Irish girls from poor houses in Ireland and were shipped to Tasmania because of a shortage of single females. Mary married a convict, Samuel Crutchley at Longford, Tasmania in 1852, they had ten children. Samuel Crutchley arrived in Tasmania on 11th April 1843 on the "John Renwick".
