    • Arthur Shuttleworth b1896 said of Henry & Leah Shuttleworth:

      My grandfather Henry was born in 1831. He married Leah Read, born in 1838. At age 16 he ran away from home, falsely stating his age as 18, and enlisted in the army. He was posted to Gibraltar (there was a large picture of Gibraltar in the living room of his home in Northenden, but was bought out after serving four years. There was a suggestion that his reason for leaving home was on account of his parents not being on good terms. His father died at age 61 and his wife (Hannah) remarried but did not long survive Charles. The reason for the remarriage may be that she was widowed and left without means of support.

      Henry joined the Manchester Police but was later persuaded to transfer to the Salford police by the Chief Constable .

      Leah Read (Henry's wife, my grandmother) came from Raynham in Norfolk. Her grandmother was a lady's maid. The top servants in those days were the lady's maid or the valet. They had to attend board school to acquire the habits and speech of their employers. When their employers were on a journey they travelled in the same coach. A knowledge of French was an advantage. Leah's mother was something of a mystery. Apparently she was a disappointed woman and that dictated her attitude to her eldest child Leah. There was a suggestion that she was unmarried but I think the explanation is that her husband was the bailiff of an estate some distance from home and that he frequently had to sleep there[1] .

      [1] Notes on the Shuttleworth tree made by Arthur indicate that at one time he believed Leah (and her siblings) to be illegitimate and that her father was a farm bailiff. He also notes that Leah said her father was home only at weekends and made a great fuss of her. She left Holt in 1853 to go to live with her Uncle and Aunt Chipperfield at Manchester to learn tailoring, which she didn't like. She went into service and moved to Brougham in 1854.
