Notes - Henry Stanley McCullagh's year of birth is unknown. Shipping records indicate his birth date was 1853, his Death Certificate shows 1849 and his Marriage Certificate 1859. Henry was born in or around Clonakilty in County Cork, Ireland, the son of Hugh McCullagh and Wife Unknown.
Griffith's Valuation for 1855 shows a Hugh McCullagh renting a property from a Jeremiah Carey for 10/- per year, in the town of Baltimore in the parish of Tullagh (later amalgamated with Creagh and Castlehaven - Church of Ireland). Hugh is believed to be the father of Henry Stanley McCullagh.
Henry arrived in South Australia from Ireland aboard the Arundel Castle. He had embarked with other passengers at Plymouth on February 2nd, 1876 and arrived in South Australia on April 19th, 1876.
In South Australia Henry worked as a groom to a local Doctor - this is how he met Caroline Wilton Day. Caroline was a daughter of Samuel Day (a Blacksmith) and Ann Elizabeth Brice. Caroline’s family connections reach back to William Day and Mary Wilton. William Day was born in Bradney, near Bridgewater in Somerset in 1792.
Henry moved to Western Australia in 1897 and camped at Kalamunda. Caroline followed with three young children landing at Albany. A sister of Caroline's (Edith Adelaide Day) moved to Western Australia at much the same time and married George Leopold Jefferies at Katanning. Henry worked as a railway and haulage contractor at Kalamunda. Caroline opened Kalamunda's first Post Office in 1902 and operated this service from a room attached to the McCullagh Cottage in Railway Rd.
A 99 year lease was obtained on Town Lot No 13 on January 1, 1913 for the yearly rent of One pound fourteen shillings - this property in Railway Road was eventually secured as freehold in 1929 for £50. A second cottage was obtained from the closure of a local mill and jinkered to the neighbouring lot. This cottage was to be the home for Benjamin James McCullagh and his family.
His obituary appeared in the West Australian of February 18th, 1929
