  • Notes
    • Herbert was known as Bert. This man is an intriguing mix. Although the records show that he married Phyllis Noel in 1960 this is misleading. Noel was Phyllis’s maiden name but she was married to I think a “Burton” during the war. Phyllis who is still living in 2012 was a beauty with flaming red hair. Bert’s sister Ida worked in the ammunition factories during the war and Phyllis was her best friend. At some stage Ida brought Phyllis home to the family farm in Bentons Road, Mornington. Bert pursued her and they lived together from this time only marrying much later.
Bert had a dairy farm where both he and his red haired beauty worked very hard. He was to use a polite phrase a womaniser and there were many scandals about his goings on mainly to do with ladies in the district. My father (Arthur - his youngest brother) always excused Bert of any wrong doing prefacing his comments with ‘but he had a hard war’. No doubt this is true.
He was extremely kind to his animals and most fond of his draft horses - Prince and Darky who were gentle giants.
