• Notes

  Baby David was the first child born to Sophie Lottie "Thelma" Free and David Pettit. His birth brought great joy to 'Mick' who was also acting as a father to Ken Francis, the child from Thelma's first marriage. It was unfortunate that little David died of an influenza virus, just before his first birthday in the Fairfield (infectious diseases) hospital. His mother Thelma would walk from the family home at 12 Faraday St Carlton, every day to be at the side of his small cot. On the day that he passed away, Thelma was turned away at the main gate by the gate keeper, being told that he had died and as such she could not be admitted. Baby David is buried with his grandparents Samuel and Newryll Free in the Coburg cemetery in Bell St. East Coburg now west Preston.
