  • Notes 
    • The 1841 and 1851 censuses shows John living at Haslingfield with his parents Samuel and Mary Free and siblings. By 1851 he was working as a shepherd.

      The Catherine House records show that John Free was married in the Chesterton district of Cambridgeshire in the April quarter of 1855 (vol 3b, page 749). His wife was either Ann Hood or Ann Miller.

      The 1861 census shows John (27 year-old shepherd born at Haslingfield) at the Plough and Harrow in the St Giles parish in Cambridge. Also present were his wife Ann (27 and born at ‘Arrington’ in Cambridgeshire), daughter Sarah Ann (5, Haslingfield) and sons William G. (3) and Samuel (1) where both boys were born at Cambridge.

      John’s wife Ann died in 1866 and John remarried.

      The 1871 census has John Free (38 and born at Haslingfield) a publican and carter, living on Madingly Road St in the parish of Giles in Cambridge. With him were his wife Lydia (26 and born at Hardwick in Cambridgeshire) and four children: Sarah Ann (15), William George (13), Samuel (11) and Emily (7). Sarah had been born at Haslingfield while the others were all born at St Giles in Cambridge.

      It seems that John’s second wife Lydia may have also died between 1871 and 1881, for the 1881 census shows John as a widower (aged 47 and born in Haslingfield). He is now living in the Madingly Road Public House in Cambridge with his children William George (23), Samuel (21), Emily (18), Mary (17) and Alice Elizabeth (10). The children had all been born in Cambridge.

      The 1891 census shows John (57, contractor) and his wife Lydia (47 and born at Oakington, Cambridgeshire) living on Maddingly Road St Giles in Cambridge. With them is their daughter Mary (17) and four lodgers.

      The 1901 census shows John (68) and Lydia (56) living at the Plow and Harrow, St Giles Cambridge
