    • The addition of the "d" is a bit of a mystery really - until I started family research, we didn't know for sure that the name was Gawne. The only person I know of who was interested in genealogy was Glad's sister, Alma who wrote to the Isle of Man asking for info on the name Gawned - response being there wasn't any record of any Gawneds on the Island. This was back in the 70's and I think it was a bit mean really because there are lots of Gawnes there, going back a long way, so they could have told her at least that! Somewhere along the way, through correspondence with a lady in the US, Alma thought the name should have been Gawne and a story started up (don't know how) that John Gawned was a sailor and jumped ship in Australia, changing his name to Gawned. I thought this was pretty far fetched or that he had no imagination whatsoever.
When I got my first home computer in 1997 and started looking I learnt about the Gawnes on the IOM, so I obtained the marriage certificate of John Gawned/Bridget and saw that he signed his name Gawne - with a bit of a squiggle at the end of it. Anyone transcribing it may have thought that the squiggle was an unfinished "d" but it doesn't account for why all Gawne's born after that used the "d"????

I have a "cousin" in South Australia who is also a descendant of John's father, Thomas Gawne and their side kept the name as Gawne. I also correspond with a lady in the US - who also shares Thomas as a GGGrandfather and the US branches have the name as Gawne.

I've just put it down as perhaps people in those early days just found it too hard to bother correcting errors on official documents once they occurred so found it easier to let the name be changed. I haven't seen the birth certificates of John and Bridget's children but this is when the error must have started. One the Aus Vital Records the name is always spelt with the "d". Still.............not a very good explanation, is it?

I (Joy Treacy) have followed the Gawne's back to 1688. The name was Gawne without the "d" until John arrived in Australia and for some reason it became Gawned. John and Bridget's three sons, once they grew up, left Victoria and came to WA on a ship to Albany, first seeking gold at Kalgoorlie and then Thomas and David joined the railways. There are various records of them in WA Railway/Postal directories. At some point John and Bridget also came to WA and by 1899 (to1905) John was working for the railways in Fremantle.
In 1899 John/Bridget were living in Fremantle Road, Cottesloe, and from 1907-12 John is listed as the senior caretaker Cottesloe Hall.
Getting back to Gladys being born at Cottesloe in 1907, her father John is listed as living in Leake Street, Peppermint Grove, but my mother says that a lot of the women in the family went to live with John senior's wife Bridget when they were due to have their children so I guess that is what Glady's mother Elizabeth did.
I found a book on Cottesloe that mentions John and Bridget as having the Dining Rooms at Wells Hall, Cottesloe and I recall Gladys and her sister Alma talking about how they used to visit "Grandma" at Wells Hall.

Its a small world really, because years later in 1966 I married a person whose grandmother told me she worked as a kitchen maid for John and Bridget when they had the dining rooms.

Eventually John and Bridget ran a boarding house in St Quentin's Avenue, Dalkeith/Nedlands.
John senior died first and when her mother-in-law Bridget Gawned died, Glady's mother Elizabeth (Lizzie) took over the running of the boarding house in St. Quentin's Avenue, eventually taking on a shop in Victoria Park. Lizzie died 1937? when she was struck by a truck while crosssing a road in Victoria Park. (with her son Robert)
