  • Notes
    • To whom it may concern,

Just a couple of things that I have found out along the way that may be of interest to you. You will note some minor differences in detail with regard to dates. I have assembled the information in chronological order:

22 August 1813 Poppy's paternal great-grandfather Robert Waters was born in Barnes, England.

10 August 1825 my father's paternal great-grandmother Susan Betts was born.

October 1833 Robert Waters (born 1813) then unmarried arrived on the vessel "Freak". Robert announced his intention of leaving the colony on 07 October 1839 but remained. He shared his brother's grant, Avon location 24, in the Toodyay district, which they called "Barn Elms" and settled there in the 1840's. On 18 November 1840 he was named for non-payment of location dues on Perth lot Q14.

Thomas Waters (1794) an unmarried gardener aged 34 years from Barnes in London arrived on the vessel "Caroline". He was allowed to select 1760 acres and took 150 acres in the Swan district on 18 November 1829 and 1610 acres in the Avon district on 30 June 1832.

1838 My father's maternal grandfather Edward Garnett was born. He married Ellen Russell Waters. He passed away in 1902.

On 3 February 1842 Robert Waters married Susan Betts (born 10 August 1825) at Guildford WA. She was the daughter of Richard Betts and Elizabeth Betts (nee Morrow). He passed away on 25 June 1893 and was buried at Culham WA. She passed away on 15 August 1893 and was buried at Toodyay. They had the following children: Robert Betts Waters (1842-1923) (married Mary Ann Ferguson - 1869), Mary
Waters (1843-1926), Thomas Waters (1845-1943) (married Mary Ann Rumble - 1868), Eliza Nixon Waters (1847-1932), Sarah Elizabeth Waters (1849-1922) (married Alexander James Ferguson - 1869), Susan Price Waters (1852-1912), Ellen Russell Waters (1854-1919), Jane Waters (1856-1916), Emma Matilda Waters (1858-1897), Esther Emily Waters (1861-1861), William Waters (1862-1862), Richard Waters (1863-1933), Caroline Amelia Waters (1865-1914) and Edwin James Waters (1868-1939).

In May 1844 Robert Waters advertised that he would pasture cattle on his property "Barn Elms" farm at Toodyay. On 18 December 1846 he advertised that he wanted a flock of sheep. In February 1847 he applied for the position of postmaster at Toodyay and in April that year advertised that he was selling seed wheat at his farm "Barn Elms". In January 1848 again advertised seed wheat for sale. Waters was mentioned in the 1849 Toodyay census. He signed a petition for a publican's licence at Toodyay in 1850.

14 July 1849 my father's paternal great-grandmother Mary Waters aged 78 years, the widow of Robert Waters died as a result of burns received after she fell against a fire on the 15-16th of ????.

05 June 1854 my father's maternal grandmother Ellen Russell Garnett (nee Waters) was born. She married Edward Garnett (1838-1902). They had eight children: Robert Edward Garnett (1877-1949), Frank Garnett (1879-1939), Amelia Ellen Garnett (1881-1935) (my grandmother who married Basil Lorne Innes Sr), James Frederick Garnett (1883-????), Evelyn Susan Garnett (1884-1884), Maude Hilda Garnett (1885-1939), Muriel Garnett (1887-????) and one other stillborn in 1892.

(Starting to go away from the Waters Family) Maud Hilda Garnett married Edward John Smith (1879-1957) who worked for the WAGR as a ganger out of Toodyay. He was the fourth son of John Brodie Smith and his wife Harriet. He was one of four brothers who left farm life on the Fleurieu Peninsula (SA) to try their luck in Western Australia. Maud and Edward were the parents of ten children including Poppy's cousins who were known to me Bill (1914-), Gwen (Morphew) (1921-1996), Harriet Ellen aka Nell (Esselmont) (1923-1987) and Robert aka Jeff (1923-) who is married to Ruth (1928-). Toodyay was a junction town on the railway lines heading toward Miling in the north and Kalgoorlie to the east. All the children were educated in Toodyay. Jeff wrote that all the sons served in the Army during WWII one of whom was taken as a POW and was repatriated from Japan as did three brothers in law including one who died as a POW in Japan.
