Notes - Henry hated his first name and preferred Walter and was know by this through out his life. He even deleted it off official documents. He like all of his siblings was educated and he too wrote letters on behalf of his father about boundary disputes.
Henry Walter, John & Janes second surviving son married EMILY ALICE QUARTERMAINE at St Peter's, Gilgering, Beverly, WA. He was 23 years old, his address at the time was Williams River. Emily was 17 years old. Emily was born at Yangedine, near York and was the daughter of Elijah Quartermaine and Elizabeth (nee Dickson). The Quartemaines came to the colony on the Britomart in 1838, they were fellow passengers of Dr Samuel Viveash, William Tanners cousin.
When Emily married her address at the time was Avondale, Beverly. Her family were in the process of settling at Yowangup Springs (near Kojonup).
Henry and Emily had 14 children. Only 11 survived to adulthood.
Henry shared his fathers' and brothers' interest in settling and developing the Williams and Arthur River areas. He held several pastoral leases there in the 1860's
In 1883 he brought land at Arthur River called Tachbrook (also referred to as Bocalarup). He would have been assisted with this purchase by his father, as he insisted all his son must own land and ensured this before his death. The adjoining property was settled by Henry's youngest brother William on the same year. Henry and Emily had been living in the area for some years before the purchase of Tachbrook.
Henry took up additional leases in the area during the 1880's but the agricultural depression of the 1890's was a financial loss. In 1896 he suffered a stroke and was left an invalid. He leased the farm to his sons who eventually sold the Tachbrook in the 1900's to W.S. Finey. This then was sold to W.C. Witte.and then was sold to Aubrey Fleay son of William.
Henry died at the age of 68 years in Wagin where he and Emily were living. Emily died 20 years later at the age of 81 years. They are both buried at Arthur River, the graves are marked simply.'Walter Fleay' and 'Emily Fleay'.
Very little is known of Emily, it has been said and written that, she was a very strong minded woman, strangely though had a terrible fear of thunder storms, she was a first class rifle shot and was reputed to advocate, 'Fire with a raised barrel. Don't try to hold the sights still on the target, the barrel moves around too much.' Her grandson is said to remember seeing her riding driving into town on their buggy and that 'She always had a very straight back and always wore black.'
Kind regards,
