Notes - Alfred was a servant to Marshall McDERMOTT who chartered 'Sterling'. Carpenter, mechanic, millwright, inventor, blacksmith, machinist, engineer. Extracted gas from blackboys for lighting his house, 1849. Installed Rottnest Lighthouse machinery, 1851; Cheriton Mill 1855. Applied to lease land at Greenough 1859. Erected Perth's 1st pipe organ in Wesley Church 1875. Installed first steam driven printing press for West Australian 1880's. (Rica Erickson). C/E. (The Bicentennial Dictionary of Western Australians by Rica Erickson).
Evidently he was a bit of an old prick, appearing in court more than once for mistreating Anna. He is reputed to be West Australias first mechanical engineer. His grandson Alfred is a person of worth and had a very vibrant career.
