  • Notes
    • Mick met my great-aunt on a cruise in the Far East in 1985, and it was a whirlwind romance, with Mick moving to Warwick, Queensland, where Elaine lived. They married later on in 1985, and I attended their wedding in Warwick. Mick had apparently had two wives prior to this and also some children; and this was Elaine's second marriage - her first husband having died twenty or so years before.

They lived together in Elaine's old family home in Warwick until Mick's death from emphysema in 1994. Mick suffered from ill-health in the last few years of his life, while Elaine remained quite fit for her age, eventually dying in 2003 at the age of 91. During the early years of their marriage, they always rented a flat at the Gold Coast for the winter months, as Warwick's climate can get terribly cold. When in Warwick, Mick was a very keen gardener and kept the old home looking beautiful. Most of Mick's background remained a mystery to us - he appeared to have no contact with his children or any other family in Western Australia. He did serve in the Merchant Navy during World War 2. Mick was always a quiet, self-contained person - he was very keen on the races, and enjoyed a bet, and spent a lot of time listening to the races on his radi

Mick died in Warwick Hospital, Queensland, and was cremated in nearby Toowoomba. His ashes are interred in the military section of Warwick Cemetary - in fact right next to the war graves where Elaine's first husband Eric Spowers is buried too. Eric served in the Light Horse in the Great War. Elaine and many of her family are also buried in Warwick. After Mick's death, Elaine lived on in the old house for a few years, finally moving into an old people's home where she died in 2003. The old family house had been sold after my father's death in 1999, and our family have kept some old photos of Mick's family & other memorabilia, including Mick's death certificate, and details of (I think) Mick's first wife. There is also a really lovely old photo of Mick's mother.

If you, or any other Bickley relatives are interested - we would be more than happy to send you all the photos and documents we have about Mick. Mick always referred to himself as "Mick", and I can remember that he didn't sound too impressed with his real name when it was revealed on his marriage certificate to Elaine. I was one of the witnesses to their marriage at Warwick Courthouse in 1985.
