Went to South Australia as a young man to work on the new railway being built between Adelaide and Port Adelaide. He was a Blacksmith, he married Jane Graves about 1854. They lived for a time on a Station property at Hammond, nr. Port Augusta, then moved to Linwood where he started a Blacksmithing business on the River Light catering for the bullock teams carting copper ore from the Burra Mines to Pt. Adelaide. There were two crossings over the river, one at Linwood and one known as Ayliffes Crossing some two miles down river. The Teamsters going south often claimed they could not pay till they were paid at Pt. Adelaide, but returned by the other crossing, hence the business at Linwood was not profitable. He took up Section 454 Hundred of Light and walked 2 miles every day to burn lime and build a Dug-out to live in. My father was born in the Dug-out. He farmed the land at Linwood. Later it was carried on by son Sydney, who enlarged it, then Grandson Cameron and now by great grandsons, Ian and Sydney.
