    Notes:

RE: Picture of Midgley Shackleton in a Coat.
I've studied the photograph with great interest and can confirm that the regalia shown is not Masonic. The style of dress and pose suggests late Victorian/early Edwardian when there were many Fraternal Orders who wore regalia. The letters "C.M." are intriguing and I cannot find reference to these letters in any of my documents on regalia of Fraternal Societies.
My suggestion is that it is the regalia of one of the many Fraternal Orders of the Temperance Movement. Perhaps Rachibites or Good Templars. The Rachibites still exist but sadly most other Fraternal Orders (Temperance or otherwise) have ceased to exist. E.g. Sons of the Phoenix, Free Gardeners, etc. If you can unravel the mystery, I'd love to know what it is.

    --------------

The CM on his cuffs are also on his collar of office, if this is correct, then it is the RAOB (Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes).
The CM would stand for City Minstrel, one of the officers of the Lodge. The order was founded in 1822, so this could be an old type collar, I have not seen one like this before. Sorry I cannot be of more help.

    Lancashire County Records Office
"1½ miles West of Rochdale on the Bury road" there was indeed a "hamlet" by the name of Chadwick in the district of Spotland in the town of Rochdale, Lancashire. There was a Chadwick Hall with members of the family Chadwick living there untill the 1700's. Modern records show that this hall is no longer there, Rochdale is now part of the urban sprawl that is modern Manchester.

    Notes:

We are lucky to have the memoires of Mary Ellens brother and he describes, going to WA to meet Abraham, who was in coolgardie in 1894,(without Mary Ellenand the children) It appears Abe did not return to the family and Mary Ellen divorced him in 1896?. I have no information on her proposed trip with the children to America, but I can tell you she was not American and to our knowledge had not been to America before that date.
