    • No story of the children of George and Martha Free would be complete without including Len. This is the story as I was told over many years. Len was maybe 5 years younger than Arthur so we can assume that all this took place in the mid 1920’s.
Mr & Mrs Connell lived out a bit further than the Free family farm on Bentons Road. Mrs Connell was in labour and being driven by buggy into the Mornington Hospital by her husband. By the time they got to Martha Free’s gate things were not going well and they stopped there. Mrs Connell died in childbirth with Martha in attendance. I suppose after nine children of her own she would have known a bit about it! This left a new born babe without a mother and so Len just stayed and was brought up as one of the family.
I must point out a quite interesting observation whenever all of the Free brothers and sisters came together there would always be a blue of some sort with people storming off. So much so that it would have been remarkable if it didn’t happen but I don’t ever remember that occurring. Len was always included in these gatherings, when there was a whip round for someone’s 50th birthday Len contributed but when Martha passed away there was a huge rift because Len was deemed to not be one of the family and so should not inherit anything. In the listing of children for death notices and the like he was also left out. They were an odd lot to say the least.
Len was of a fairly heavy build and every time he would visit Evelyn he was told in no uncertain terms he was not to sit on her Fluer chairs - this upset him greatly. He married later in life to Betty and they had two lovely daughters from there on his life revolved around his little family.
