Notes - Jack was the eighth child of George and Martha and was born with one leg shorter than the other. This was only slightly noticeable but I suspect he may have been favoured for this as a child.
Jack grew from being a naughty child to being a naughty adult!!!!! He was always balancing between having loads of money or absolute destitution.
He went to Far North Queensland to work in the cane fields. Something I always admired him for. This was hard, dirty and back breaking work - cutting cane by hand. He returned with a wife, Dulcie from Innisfail. I always thought she had a lovely tan until I moved to Cairns in the early 1970’s when I quickly realised she was related to the kanakas from the islands that had been brought in to work in the cane fields - known as blackbirding. I don’t mean this in a nasty way at all. In Victoria on the Mornington Peninsula none of us had ever seen an aboriginal, let alone a south sea islander so it did come as a bit of a revelation.
Some years he and his growing family would return from the north in a flash new car, all dressed in lovely new clothes but other years they just turned up bedraggled and looking for a loan to buy food. They would do the rounds of the family just to survive. I remember great quarrels between my parents who were doing it tough to put it mildly after a visit from Jack that ended in Dad lending him money which he knew would never be repaid.
On one of my infrequent visits back from Cairns there was a family gathering and I told Jack how I admired him cutting cane and what a hard job it would have been. He just laughed and told me he would never be that stupid - he ran the poker school at the Garadunga Pub!
Some years later he owned a race horse named ‘Flying Sox’ and by chance it did very well. He owned a gold LTD (Ford) and my dad told me that he and Jack and someone else went and collected all Jack’s winnings and sat in the car and threw the money around like confetti - all $75,000 which was an amazing amount way back then.
He did run a poker school in Mornington but I doubt his family would approve of me continuing along that line………………. Suffice to say he had a lot in common with Alfred Free 1868-1946 but he was lucky in that he had better connections! Although I do remember him going to court when I was very young.
